I wrote about this back in 2018, and guess what? It’s still the number one question I get asked: “Which social media platforms should my business be on?”
The answer might surprise you – and it’s probably not what you’re currently doing.
The Reality Check Most Businesses Need
Here’s what I see happening: Business owners are spreading themselves thin across every social platform because “that’s where everyone is.” They’re posting the same content everywhere, getting frustrated with low engagement, and wondering why social media “doesn’t work” for them.
Sound familiar?
The reality is this: You don’t need to be everywhere. In fact, being everywhere is probably hurting your business more than helping it.
The Truth About Social Media That No One Talks About
Truth #1: Your customers aren’t on every platform Just because Facebook has billions of users doesn’t mean YOUR customers are actively using it to discover businesses like yours. Your ideal customer might be scrolling LinkedIn during lunch breaks, not TikTok.
Truth #2: Each platform needs different content What works on Instagram won’t work on LinkedIn. What engages people on Facebook falls flat on Twitter. If you’re copy-pasting the same post everywhere, you’re missing the mark on every platform.
Truth #3: Consistency beats quantity every time It’s better to post regularly on one platform than sporadically on five. Your audience needs to know when to expect to hear from you.
Your Quick Social Media Reality Check
Time for some honest answers:
Platform Audit:
- Which platforms are you currently on?
- When did you last post on each one?
- Which posts get the most genuine engagement (not just likes)?
- Do you actually know where your customers spend their time online?
Content Reality Check:
- Are you posting the same thing everywhere?
- Do you have enough content ideas for all your platforms?
- How much time are you spending on social media each week?
- Is that time giving you a good return?
Audience Reality Check:
- Can you describe your ideal customer in detail?
- Have you ever asked your existing customers which platforms they use?
- Are you getting enquiries or sales from your social media efforts?
If you’re feeling uncomfortable with your answers, you’re not alone. Most businesses are doing social media the hard way.
Three Quick Wins to Transform Your Social Media Strategy
Quick Win #1: Pick Your Platform Choose ONE platform to focus on for the next month. Base this decision on where your customers actually are, not where you think they should be. If you’re not sure, ask them!
Quick Win #2: Create Platform-Specific Content Stop posting the same thing everywhere. Instead, adapt your message for each platform’s style and audience. A LinkedIn post should sound professional and industry-focused. An Instagram post can be more visual and personal.
Quick Win #3: Batch Your Content Spend one hour a week planning and creating content rather than scrambling for something to post each day. Your content will be more strategic, and you’ll save time.
